Her missions included seizing numerous ships, defending the Hawaiian Island against annexation by the British in 1843 and transporting food to Ireland during the Great Famine of 1845 – 1849. It was also the first U.S. warship to visit China in 1842, and it became a training vessel in 1871. Today, it brings back glorious memories to tens of thousands of tourists who visit her each year in Baltimore.
