About Mountain Boy Sledworks
Is there any lead in that paint? Definitely not.
All of our sleds are made with non-toxic finishes, and we have them regularly tested so we are sure that they are lead-free. We use wood dyes to bring out the color and figure of the wood, and then a clear lacquer or polyurethane on top. We put on four coats of lacquer or three coats of polyurethane to create a marine-grade finish. Please contact us if you'd like a copy of the test reports. At the same time, we have all of our products tested to make sure they meet child safety standards, and they do.
Our Environmental Commitment
We are working hard to minimize the impact of all of our operations on the environment. Some key elements include: Using only recycled cardboard packaging. Choosing only fast-growing, common, sustainable hardwoods such as birch, willow and maple. Ensuring that every part of the wood is used. Smaller pieces are turned into kicksled slats or Christmas ornaments, and the smallest bits end up in our woodstove or in the wood-drying kiln. Just as important, making products that last! We think it makes sense to buy a sled (or wagon or scooter) that will last for years, rather than buying a cheaper sled that won't last nearly as long.
Our Mountain Boggans are true classic toboggans, made by hand with only the best materials. The steam-bent planks are knot-free, flexible basswood, with hand-carved willow crosspieces.
The curl at the front is big enough that an adult can tuck their feet up in there, and the rope is extra long. We use only stainless-steel screws and genuine leather grommets, with a lead-free, marine-grade finish that gracefully weathers the elements.

Remember those strong old Flexible Flyers, the ones that refused to break? Our Classic Flyer is what a runner sled should be: tough, with thick kiln-dried planks of beautiful northern birch and extra-thick powder-coated steel runners. We paid particular attention to the "knees," the bent steel parts that connect the runners to the top. On mass-market runner sleds, these are the weakest point and collapse easily. On the Classic, the knees are made of extra-thick steel designed to handle lots of abuse.
We use only stainless-steel bolts, and the solid birch top makes the Classic the most sturdy Flyer you've ever seen. This year, we added willow handrails for better grip. This heirloom-quality sled is designed to last for more than one lifetime.

The Royal Flyer for many people, this is the perfect sled -- the same design as our Classic Flyer, but built with some of the most beautiful wood imaginable.
We use highly figured maple, sanded smooth and hand-rubbed with a lead-free, marine-grade finish. The sled is perfect on a wall, and even better on a good steep hill.
Stainless steel hardware is used throughout, and the powder-coated metal runners have extra-strong "knees" (the bent-metal parts that connect the runners to the sled). The patent-pending double-pivot design gives fabulous turning power, even on slick ice.

Silverton Kicksled by Mountain Boy SledWorks. Seat fits one child or adult. Kicksledding is pure joy, and turns nearly all sledders into mountain boys and girls.
Gliding along on hard-packed snow or ice seems effortless (though it’s actually good exercise), and you get to take your sweetheart or young one along too. As if that weren’t good enough, kicksledding is also excellent aerobic exercise and a fantastic way to get a workout in the course of routine daily activities!
Snowpacked streets, back roads, and well-used snowmobile trails are perfect for kicksledding, particularly those with a gentle grade. A long, plowed driveway curling down a hillside – aaah. And, your dog can help when you attach the optional Mushing Package. It's not very tough to kicksled, either (see our Kicksled Primer for instructions).

The sled body is made of American white ash. We make the very comfortable slatted seat from many different hardwoods. Screws are stainless steel, and connecting bolts are high-grade anodized steel.
The runners are highly flexible tempered steel, with polished and waxed edges. Rings are welded to the front of each runner, making it simple to attach a bridle and tugline for dogsledding.
Multiple coats of UV-resistant, lead-free finish mean the sled can be left outside for extended periods without damage.
The handle on each sled is a specially chosen native willow branch, hand-carved for a perfect fit and polished to show its natural beauty. No two handles are alike, and each has its own unique look and feel.
Because each kicksled is a one-of-a-kind work, each is signed and numbered on the bottom by the sledmaker.
Folding down the kicksled is easy, and reduces the height of the sled from 36" to 7" -- just right for putting it on top of your car or into the attic for summer storage.

The beechwood surface is protected by four coats of marine-grade finish. We use only stainless-steel hardware, and an extra-long pull rope. !
The Slalom seats two adults or three children. We also like to ride it lying down with a small child perched up on top --that way they can feel the thrill of the ride and not get any snow in their face!
We recommend you wax the bottom of the Slalom for best performance, but you'll find that it flies down the hill right out of the box.

When we build an Ultimate Flyer, we start with planks of beautiful, golden birch. We plane down the planks, sand them, burn in the Mountain Boy brand, and give every piece several coats of a lead-free, marine-grade finish. We attach hand rails of hand-carved willow, giving each sled a unique look and feel. Copper ferrules between the body of the sled and the rails add to the rustic look, while adding substantial strength.
On the bottom of the sled, we attach a pair of proprietary, custom-molded plastic skids. We like to think of them as greased lightning -- they are very fast, but their shape allows for smooth, decisive turning. Contoured runners bite into the snow or ice so you can carve down hard-packed slopes, while a solid bottom of custom-molded slippery plastic lets the sled float through soft snow.
